Help Knowles Tooth

Knowles Tooth is a large house in the countryside at Hurstpierpoint, providing breaks and holidays to families and children from throughout Sussex. The team works to support families overcome difficult periods in their lives with positive, emotional and practical help and advice. Find out more here.

Keep fighting fit

For the mature man! 1st February, held in the Barn from 2.00 to 3.15pm. Designed to improve basic posture, joint flexibility, ability to balance. We will look at ways to make small changes to lifestyle that will help maintain muscle strength and general health.

The Befrienders

A pastoral care group offering an opportunity to talk; we provide company if you are lonely and housebound, we will pray and give any practical help possible. We can, for example, give lifts to hospital or to medical or dental appointments, and visit or cook a meal if you have been in hospital.

We are having a monthly coffee morning, usually on the first Thursday of the month (next meeting Thursday, 2nd February) from 10.30 to 11.30 in the Chatterbox Room, opposite the school. We can pick you up and take you home if you find difficulty getting there. For more information, please contact Jo Wood (phone number on the last of the ‘white pages’ of  the Parish News, or by email using the address at the foot of this page).

The February meeting is on Thursday, 23rd, 3.00–4.30pm at the Community Centre, Newick. You are warmly welcome to come along for the whole time or just drop in as you are able.

St Mary’s 5 Year/Mission Action Plan

The Way Forward
Working groups have been formed for Young People’s Work, Prayer & Worship, Community, Fellowship and Governance, with each reporting back to the Parochial Church Council. These are very wide ranging, covering everything from the need to start a junior church group for the 11+ age range to the need to repair the churchyard wall.

The reponse from the start has been very encouraging, but if you are not yet involved but wish to be, please contact Jo Wood or Ian Reekie (via email address below). The 9.30am Prayer Meeting in the Barn each Sunday is well attended and all are welcome to come along. Richard Jackson, who led the November conference, will be attending the 19th March PCC meeting, when the results of the Working Groups will be discussed and used in the future planning for St Mary’s.

St Mary’s Annual Gift Day

Our annual gift day falls on Sunday, 27th May this year. Our grateful thanks yet again to those of you who support the church financially. Newick church has been a place of Christian worship and teaching and a witness to the gospel for well over 900 years. We seek to serve God and the community, and are here in times of joy and sorrow, festivals and special occasions. We serve our school through good and close links.

The Church has a real role in the community and seeks to serve, and be there in times of need.

If you would like to play a part in keeping the church open and active: Regular giving, gift aided if possible, is what helps most and if you can increase what you give, or have not given before but would like to start doing so, or if you would like to make a one-off donation, please respond using the form available here (Page 1 / Page 2) as PDFs for you to print out and fill in. Thank you.

Ride & Stride

If you would like to take part in the annual (each September) sponsored bike ride/walk in aid of the Sussex Historic Churches Trust, you will find further details at www.rideandstride.info.

Restful retreats

There are several places not too far away where you can visit to receive teaching or to 'recharge your batteries'.

Day courses (and longer) are run at: Ashburnham Place, Penhurst Retreat Centre and Crowhurst Healing Centre, all near Battle; Burrswood Place, Groombridge; Pilgrim Hall near Halland; Hook Hall, Uckfield.

Some of these are also run as retreat centres where you can have a really restful break.

Parish magazine - help required

We could do with a bit more help on two fronts: Assembling the magazine (about 2 hours on the afternoon of the Tuesday before the last Sunday of the month) and distributing - delivering magazines once a month, plus collecting subs once a year. Please email (address below) for details. Alternatively, perhaps you could volunteer to stand in once or twice a year to cover someone's round during holidays or sickleave?

Dancing for Fun and Fitness

Dance and exercise sessions suitable for ladies 'of a certain age', aimed at improving flexibility, mobility, balance, fitness, bone density and general wellbeing. The cost is only £2 per session.

Gentle exercise, movement and dance for fun and fitness: Wednesdays 11am - 12.30pm, St Mary's Barn Centre

Fridays 2.30pm - 4pm, St Mary's Barn Centre

The sessions are sponsored by St Mary's Church, Sport Relief, and Wealden Healthcare PCT. For more information please get in touch with Patsy Bailey, or use the email address at the foot of this page.

Weekly Prayer Group

A small group meets regularly at Cobbs Nest Farmhouse, Newick, to pray together for our church and the community it serves. We have been meeting on Mondays at 2pm for about half-an-hour of open prayer, followed by tea and coffee for those wishing to stay on for discussion afterwards. Anyone is welcome to come and go as their time allows - it is totally informal. Pleae speak to Kate Francis if you would like to be involved but prefer a different day and/or time. (The times given here may change, so do please check first.)

Newick Distress Trust

The Trust, which is a registered charity, was founded in 1984 and since its foundation has helped many individuals and families in the village who have been in critical financial need. Anyone wishing to apply for assistance, or to obtain further information, should speak to one of the Trustees who can be contacted by emailing the address below, and this will of course be treated in the strictest confidence.
